New School Year

2We have started our fifth year as Primary School and are excited to start off on some good notes. Last year we took our first government standardized test and our kids did pretty well. We had 5 students get an A, 2 students got a B and one student got a C. In our ward we placed 4th out of 20 and in country wide against other schools with number of students less that 40 taking the test we placed 655 out of 3997 which means we were in the top 16% country wide. I looked at several other schools in an attempt to determine just how good or bad we might have done. While we were comparable to another private school that was taking their test for the first time (they had all As and Bs) but are in an area closer to a large city and likely have more parents who have finished primary school. In the end our best clue as to if our school is having a positive effect, is by comparing it to the government school a little more than a mile and half away. This would be the school these kids would be going to if our school was not here. They had 0-As, 11-Bs, 14-Cs, 7-Ds, and 3 that failed. They ranked 12th out of 20 in our Ward and 2498 out of 3997 country wide for schools testing less than 40 students. I believe we proved we were needed and can provide an quality education, but I think we still have a lot of room for improvement.

As we start our new year I would like to show you our new students that have started with us. Our current registration is 157 students.

We also have a new teacher, Peter (will have two new teachers soon to replace one that left).

This year sees some big changes coming as well with the new dining hall. We have not built seats or tables yet, but the kids are still making use of dry, clean place to sit and eat as a group instead of on the ground.

We are also renting a very expensive Toyota Coaster Bus to transport the students. This allows one trip to pick all the kids up instead of three trips. The rental includes maintenance, fuel and a driver. We hope to purchase one in the next year to reduce costs.

I have some pictures from our first weeks of the new school year and the kids singing the national anthem video, but first I wanted to share Alhaji (our day guard’s son) helping his little sister Alwina with her porridge.
